Waxed jackets have a long history stretching back to the 19th century and are described in their simplicity as a British icon that has become an appreciated classic in the Swedish context.
History
Originally designed for professionals who needed protection from the elements, these jackets were often seen in ports and at sea, but it wasn't long before they became a fashion icon.
Waxed jackets were first made for fishermen and sailors who needed a jacket that could effectively resist rain and moisture. The jackets are made from robust cotton that has been impregnated with a special wax blend. This makes the fabric both extra durable and water repellent, protecting the wearer from the harsh weather conditions and work tasks of the time. Today, you won't find many dockworkers or fishermen wearing waxed jackets at work, but are found in many other parts of society. Today there are so many more technical materials with higher levels of waterproofness, stretch and wind protection to choose for those professions, and with us today it is a common feature of both the urban and rural landscape that appreciates them for their timeless design and functional properties. At Jaktstil we sell a lot of waxed jackets both to hunters and non-hunters who perhaps mainly appreciate the garment for its various properties.
In recent years, it has probably not escaped anyone's attention what a boost the popularity of the garment has once again received and is again seen very frequently in both big cities and on the hunt. The UK may be far beyond our borders, but it still shares many similarities in weather, wind and climate. This makes waxed jackets a wise choice to wear for the Swedish and Scandinavian customer who also wants to adapt to our sometimes harsh climate, but still not compromise on style.
At Jaktstil.se we offer waxed jackets for both men, women and children. Above all, we work with the prestigious Hoggs of Fife from Scotland, which still produces all its goods in the UK, but Walker & Hawkes is also a popular brand we sell that also produces its products in the UK.
This makes us a little extra happy as the product has its origin and history from there and much production has unfortunately been moved to other countries far away from us.
One of the great advantages of a waxed jacket is its long durability if you just take care of them a little and wear them with love. A waxed jacket can last for years and can even be passed down from generation to generation, acquiring a really nice patina over time. So make sure to take care of your jacket regularly and you will have a jacket for the future.
How do you care for and waterproof or re-wax your waxed jacket?
The most common and perhaps classic approach to re-waxing your jacket is to use wax, heat it up and then apply it over the jacket. However, we recommend another way of doing it that is even more convenient, and the solution is called wax spray. It saves you the hassle of heating the jacket, the wax, applying it, wiping it off, etc. With this wax spray, you can easily apply the waterproofing to the jacket by spraying it on and then letting it air out and it's done.
Here you can find our full range of waxed jackets at the moment.
